Core Ethical Principles

  • Respect for human dignity & freedom of choice
Practitioners support the client’s autonomy and do not use game formats as pressure or manipulation.

  • Confidentiality
Personal information and stories shared in games are kept confidential, except where disclosure is required by law. Practitioners follow applicable personal data laws (e.g., PIPEDA in Canada).

  • Voluntary participation & safety
Participation is always voluntary. People can stop at any time. Practitioners monitor emotional state and create a psychologically safe space.

  • Honesty & transparency
No false promises, exaggerated claims, or guarantees of “instant transformation.” The format, limitations, cost, and expectations are communicated clearly.

  • Ecological impact of methods
Game methods must be safe, learned, and appropriate for the participant. The impact should be gentle, respectful, and aligned with the client’s pace.

  • Professional responsibility
Practitioners work within their competence, recognize their limits, and refer to licensed specialists when needed. Game Practice does not replace therapy or medical treatment.

  • Respectful collaboration with colleagues
No discrediting, plagiarism, copying games, or misuse of intellectual property. Collegial relationships are based on respect and proper attribution.

  • Responsibility to the Association
Members understand that their public behavior affects IATGP’s reputation and commit to strengthen the profession and community.
